When the world population reached 5 billion on July 11, 1987, the United Nations expressed concern over this increasing population.
In view of this, on July 11, 1989, the United Nations organized a program to create awareness among the people about the increasing population.
World Population Day was celebrated for the first time on 11 July 1989 and since then it is celebrated every year
In 1990, this original date i.e. July 11 was made official by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate it as 'World Population Day'
